YEAR REVIEW by Mikey
2005's #1: Tony Christie featuring Peter Kay - (Is This The Way To) Amarillo“Well 2005, was a year for charity, reality and novelty and all three are in the top 3 of the review chart, firstly Tony Christie spent 7 weeks on a trot at No.1 in March, with "(Is This The Way To) Amarillo", all proceeds of the single was donated to Comic Relief Appeal Fund. The song was revived by popular comic from Bolton, Peter Kay, who appeared in the cheerful video. At mid-point whilst Tony was No.1, download sales came into effect, and made the singles chart go a little bit doolally, but it seems the singles chart has slowed down in the past year, with the download effect. At No.2, we have the winner of the 2nd X-Factor series Shayne Ward, with "That’s My Goal" his debut single, which spent 4 weeks at No.1, including 3 weeks at the beginning of 2006, and it was also the Christmas No.1 of 2005, hopefully his follow-up single will be a total disaster! And at No.3, its novelty time (again!), the awful ringtone by the Crazy Frog which spent 4 weeks at No.1 with "Axel F" the most irritating No.1 track of 2005 for me. The biggest surprise of the year 2005 is the No.4 record which actually climbed to No.1 after spending 6 weeks on chart (12-6-2-3-3-3-1-...) by James Blunt, with "You’re Beautiful" which spent a total of 5 weeks at No.1 way back in July of 2005, and still on chart as we speak now. The song was his breakthrough single, followup up the No.44 "Wisemen" to be re-released in 2006, whilst the album "Back To Bedlam" dominated the album charts by spending 8 consecutive weeks at No.1, and spending a further 2 since then. Finally a new U.S. girl band by the name of Pussycat Dolls stormed the British charts and made a big impact with their debut single "Don’t Cha", with the help of well-known rapper Busta Rhymes. They also followed up with another No.1 "Stickwitu". All in all 2005 has been a very erratic year with the download effect affecting the sales of our singles, and on a sour note the year 2005 started with a reality winner of the X-Factor series 1 with Steve Brookstein and ended again with Shayne Ward, the winner of X Factor series 2, which sounds like a very depressing end to 2005, not forgetting the Elvis Presley’s re-issues at the beginning of the year, and now the Michael Jackson ones to come. But on a high note the band of the year has to be Arctic Monkeys, they completely surprised everyone by their debut single "I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor", which landed straight in at No.1, no one saw it coming. If I had to pick a favourite single of the year it will have to be Madonna with her 3-week-stint at No.1, with her comeback single "Hung Up" which sampled Abba's "Gimme Gimme Gimme (A Man After Midnight)", and I shall end my review there with my favourite artist and single of the year… Madonna, well done Madge!”
