GODFATHERS OF PUNK!
American Idiot is the band’s first album of new material since Warning which was released in 2000. However are they as strong as ever or are Green Day begging to lose their touch?
01. American Idiot The bands comeback single opens the album. American Idiot as we all know is a little controversial however is a perfect slice of Green Day’s unique punk rock sound. American Idiot is so hard not to like and a perfect opening to the album of the same name. So far, so good! 5/5
02. Jesus Of Suburbia
I. Jesus Of Suburbia
II. City Of The Dammed
III. I Don’t Care
IV. Dearly Beloved
V. Tales Of Another Broken Home
Unlike any other album around at the minute on Green Day’s latest album they feature two 9 minute stories, consisting of 5 tracks. The first is Jesus Of Suburbia. These 5 tracks are really easy listening and flow nicely. It’s a great idea. 4/5
03. Holiday Holiday is the third track on American Idiot and well, there is no stopping these guys. This is more of the amazing punk rock that Green Day produce. Holiday is an unforgettable track, and will have you singing all day long. Holiday keeps the album flowing nicely. 5/5.
04. Boulevard Of Broken Dreams The second single from American Idiot is Boulevard Of Broken Dreams. Starting with the lines I Walk A Lonely Road. Boulevard Of Broken Dreams is a little slower to your average Green Day song however slow verses build up to a killer chorus, and all that is left to be said is what a great choice for their next single! 5/5
05. Are We The Waiting Are We The Waiting is also on the slow side. Are We The Waiting is completely different to Boulevard Of Broken Dreams, however as a listener I was still gripped. What a tune. The backing vocals in this track work extremely well. 4/5
06. St. Jimmy St. Jimmy sees Green Day return to their trademark sound. This is the first track on the album that isn’t as catchy than the previous 5. However after a 5 lines this really begins to grown on you. If you give it time, St. Jimmy will become one of your favorite tracks on this album. 4/5
07. Give Me A Novocain In many respects Give Me A Novocain is like Boulevard Of Broken Dreams. Like Boulevard Of Broken Dreams, Give Me A Novocain starts of slow and builds up into a killer chorus. Give Me A Novocain is amazing and Billie Joe’s vocals are outstanding. Give Me A Novocain leads straight into She’s A Rebel. 5/5
08. She’s A Rebel She’s A Rebel follows on from Give Me A Novocain, however the tempo is completely different. She’s A Rebel is more like American Idiot minus the clever lyrical content. Nevertheless She’s A Rebel is another cool track from the American rockers, however towards the end it tends to get a little repetitive. 3/5
09. Extraordinary Girl Extraordinary Girl picks up the temp once more and will no doubt please avid fans of the band. This song maybe up-tempo but it shows the bands softer side. On the first listen this song irritated me, however it is a grower. 4/5
10. Letter Bomb What a little corker of a tune this is! Letter Bomb is musical genius. Lyrically this song is very strong and once again Billie Joe’s vocals are very strong. Nothing else to say. Truly amazing. 5/5
11. Wake Me Up When September Ends Wake Me Up When September Ends slows the tempo down, however unlike previous ballads, this song doesn’t begin to pick up pace, until nearer the end of the song and even then it slows down. This is a beautiful tune, which really should be considered as a possible single. (Maybe to be released next September) 5/5
12. Homecoming
I. The Death Of St. Jimmy
II. East 12th ST.
III. Nobody Likes You
IV. Rock And Roll Girlfriend
V. We’re Coming Home Again
The second story on the album is Homecoming. This bundle of tracks are better than the ones on Jesus Of Suburbia. There are some killer tunes. Out of the 5 the stand out tracks were The Death Of St. Jimmy and Rock & Roll Girlfriend. The way that the tracks all intermingle with each other is fantastic and it is 9 minutes of the best music that my cd player has ever seen. Truly electrifying. 5/5
13. Whatsername American Idiot closes in spectacular style. Whatsername has a slightly longer introduction which features Mike Dirnt on bass. When I bought this album I was excepting it to end with a rockier song however it ends with a slower song, however it blends in with the rest of the album so nicely and is a real beauty. Towards the end of the song the tempo picks up for a second then it slows down for about 5 seconds and then the band finish with the killer chorus that I was expecting. What a perfect end to what can only be described as a perfect album. 5/5
American Idiot provides over an hour of the best music that you will hear in a long time. This album is strong from beginning to end and shows that although these guys haven’t released anything for 4 years it was worth the wait. All they have to do now is get to work on their 7th album. No resting now. Magnificent.
